Why Do We Do What We Do?

Everybody likes a bit of people watching, don’t they? We as humans are fascinating creatures. All heading in a direction, but do we know where to?
So I am currently sitting in Costa, with my coffee, I never used to drink it, but now I can’t seem to get enough of the stuff (seems to link in with early morning wake ups, funny that?!)

Anyway, sitting here watching people come and go, some dressed in suits, dresses, some dressed like they have just woken up! It’s 11am!! Get yourself together! I can talk, sitting in my gym kit. They are probably thinking the same!

All these people are going off to spend their day doing whatever it is they do and I’m betting that this stop off for coffee is a regular part of their routine, it may be a part of your routine.

The point I’m making is that everybody has some form of routine to their life, whether you are happy with that routine or not is another matter.

We wake up, have a shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to work, stop work to have some lunch usually a sandwich or something packaged, start work again, travel home, watch some TV or similar, go to bed (have some well earned ‘broken’ sleep), wake up tired and repeat it all over again.

Sound familiar?

When we finish school, we actually have to think for ourselves, the part of our life that was structured day to day from the age of 5 is now over. What next?

Some of us go to University to further our education, get a degree, then use that degree to get a job and start to make some money.

Some of us get straight into work, maybe because we have had enough of education or we have a ‘plan’ that doesn’t require a degree.

Whatever you choose, is there a reason to it, or do you make that decision based off what the people (family and friends) around you are doing/have done? We believe that we have a plan and dream about our perfect life in the future.

But, as we all know, very rarely does the ‘plan’ happen without a few bumps along the way. The path isn’t always smooth and it can get disheartening.

Most of the time we just accept that our dreams are just that, a dream, a figment of our imagination, that we will never achieve and we just resign ourselves to ‘bog standard’.

What I’m trying to get at is, how many of you are actually happy with your life, your job, your body, your relationships?

If you’re not happy, why don’t you change something?

Don’t worry you’re not the only one, nearly every person has something that they would change in their life.

The reason we don’t change is simple. It’s f**king scary! Stepping out of our comfort zone isn’t nice, but if we don’t do it, how can we progress?

We do what we do because it’s easy! It’s too easy to be lazy, as humans we are designed to find an easier solution to problems, this works for some aspects, but not all. For example, fitness, getting the results you want requires hard work, there are no shortcuts.

So a little task for those of you reading this. Look at the aspects of your life, what are you not truly happy with? Now create a plan that you can achieve, that will improve that aspect. It won’t happen overnight, but if you stick to the steps you have written out, it will happen.
